What a Watershed Does, and Why This One Reaches Your Driveway

A watershed is the area of land where all the water that falls on it drains to the same place. If you live on the Eastern Shore, rain landing on your roof is heading for Mobile Bay, and it will get there in hours.

That is not a metaphor. It is drainage, and it is the reason the health of a bay is decided mostly on land.

What water picks up on the way

Rain reaching bare soil, pavement or a lawn does not arrive at the bay in the state it left the sky.

Sediment. Bare or disturbed soil erodes. Suspended sediment clouds the water, which reduces the light reaching submerged grasses, which removes the nursery habitat that juvenile fish and shrimp depend on. Sediment is the single largest pollutant by volume in most coastal watersheds.

Nutrients. Lawn fertiliser, septic leakage and agricultural runoff deliver nitrogen and phosphorus. In the water these feed phytoplankton blooms. When the bloom dies and decomposes, the process consumes oxygen — which connects directly to the hypoxic bottom water behind Mobile Bay's jubilees.

Bacteria. Pet waste, failing septic systems and livestock. This is what closes shellfish beds and swimming areas after heavy rain.

Everything from roads. Oil, brake dust, metals, tyre particles. A parking lot is an efficient collection surface, and the first flush of a storm carries the accumulated week straight into the nearest creek.

Why forested land at the edge matters

Undeveloped land between the uplands and the water does specific measurable work.

It slows water down. Rain hitting forest floor infiltrates rather than running. Slower water carries less sediment and has time to soak in.

Roots hold soil. Vegetated banks erode at a fraction of the rate of bare ones. Removing shoreline vegetation is one of the most reliable ways to lose the shoreline.

Wetlands filter. Marsh and wet woodland trap sediment and take up nutrients before they reach open water. A wetland is doing water treatment for free, continuously, and the replacement cost is enormous.

Canopy moderates temperature. Shaded creeks stay cooler, and cooler water holds more oxygen.

This is what a shoreline preserve is doing between visits. Not only holding trees for people to walk among, but intercepting what the developed land behind it sends toward the bay.

The arithmetic that makes small parcels count

A common and reasonable objection: what difference does one modest property make against a watershed of hundreds of square miles?

Two answers.

First, position matters more than area. Land directly at the water's edge intercepts everything passing through it. An acre on the shoreline does more filtering work than ten acres at the top of the watershed.

Second, this is a cumulative problem and therefore a cumulative solution. No single parking lot caused the bay's water quality issues. They are the sum of thousands of individual decisions, which means they are also reversed by an accumulation of individual decisions.

What you can do on your own property

Direct downspouts onto planted ground, not onto pavement. Water that soaks in isn't runoff.

Keep a vegetated buffer on any creek or shoreline you own. Even a narrow strip of unmown vegetation changes what leaves the property.

Reduce or eliminate fertiliser. If you use it, use less than the label suggests and never before rain.

Fix the septic system. A failing system is a continuous source, and the owner is often unaware.

Sweep rather than hose. Whatever you rinse off a driveway is going to the bay.

Plant natives. Deeper root systems, no fertiliser requirement, less irrigation, better infiltration.

None of this is dramatic. All of it accumulates, which is exactly how the problem was made.
