Citizen Science: Turning a Walk Into Data
Most of what is known about where species occur and when comes from people who were not scientists. The recording infrastructure is now good enough that a casual visitor can contribute usable data in the time it takes to walk a trail.
eBird
Run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, eBird is the largest biodiversity dataset in the world by volume of records.
You submit a checklist: where you were, when, how long, and what you saw. The app handles the rest, including flagging unusual reports for review by regional experts — which is what keeps the data credible.
What it's used for. Migration timing and routes, range shifts, population trends, and increasingly for conservation planning. Published research using eBird data runs to hundreds of papers.
What makes a checklist useful. Complete counts rather than a list of highlights. Record everything you identified, including the common species. A checklist reporting only the interesting bird tells researchers nothing about what else was or wasn't present.
Report numbers, not just presence. Ten of a species is different from one.
Note the effort — distance walked and time spent. Data without effort is far less useful, because ten species in twenty minutes means something different from ten species in four hours.
iNaturalist
Broader in scope: plants, insects, fungi, reptiles, anything.
You photograph an organism and upload it. Computer vision suggests an identification and the community confirms or corrects it. Records that reach community consensus become "research grade" and flow into the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, where researchers use them.
Where it's especially valuable. Insects and plants, which are undersampled compared to birds. A photograph of an unremarkable beetle may be one of very few records for that species in the county.
It also identifies things for you, which makes it useful as a field tool even if you never care about the data side.
Why this matters for a small preserve
Species records accumulate into an argument.
A preserve that can document three hundred bird species, a list of native plants, and a record of migration use has evidence. That evidence supports grant applications, planning objections, protective designations and public interest. A site with no records has an assertion.
For land at the edge of a growing town, an accumulating public dataset is one of the more durable forms of protection available — and it costs nothing but the time visitors were already spending.
Practical starting points
Submit a checklist every visit. Even a short one. Even if you only identified six species.
Photograph what you can't name. Upload it and let the community work on it. Unidentified is fine; unrecorded is a loss.
Record the ordinary. The value is in the aggregate. A hundred records of a common species across ten years shows a trend; one record of a rarity shows an anecdote.
Be honest about uncertainty. Mark uncertain identifications as uncertain. A wrong record is worse than none, and reviewers spend real time correcting confident errors.
Other programmes worth knowing
Christmas Bird Count, run since 1900 — the longest-running citizen science dataset in existence, and a genuinely enjoyable day.
Great Backyard Bird Count, four days each February, no experience required.
Project FeederWatch, for anyone with a feeder and consistency.
Nest monitoring, which requires training and care but produces data almost nothing else provides.
The point
You were going to walk the trail anyway. Recording what you saw takes five minutes at the end and turns a private morning into something a researcher in another country can use.
That is an unusually good return on effort.
